In a major stride toward improving financial inclusion and digital transformation, the Saudi Central Bank (SAMA) has announced that visitors to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia can now open local bank accounts through approved digital banking platforms.
The new policy, first highlighted by Analytix Arabia, marks a turning point in how visitors manage their financial transactions while in the Kingdom. It forms part of the Saudi Vision 2030 reforms aimed at simplifying digital access, promoting cashless payments, and enhancing visitor experience across all sectors — including tourism, business, and religious travel.
According to SAMA, the initiative will allow qualified visitors to open, verify, and operate bank accounts electronically, using digital identity verification systems that meet Saudi data protection and anti-fraud standards.
Although the move currently targets specific visitor categories — such as long-term visit, family, and business visa holders — financial observers say it could soon extend to short-term religious pilgrims, including those visiting for Hajj and Umrah.
Easing the Burden for Pilgrims
For Nigerian pilgrims and millions of Muslims around the world, the possibility of digital banking access inside Saudi Arabia represents a new era of convenience. It could mean safer, cashless transactions, instant money transfers, and seamless payments for accommodation, transportation, and other essential services during the sacred journey.
However, as of now, no official confirmation has been made regarding the inclusion of Hajj and Umrah visa holders under the new arrangement. Saudi authorities are expected to release more details in the coming weeks.
An official of Aljawaaz Travels & Tours, one of Nigeria’s most reliable Hajj and Umrah operators, applauded the development, describing it as “ a promising innovation that aligns with our vision to make pilgrimage safer, smarter, and stress-free for our clients.”
“Anything that enhances financial security for pilgrims is welcome. The ability to open a Saudi bank account during Hajj or Umrah would eliminate the risk of carrying large sums of cash and enable direct digital payments for key services,” the spokesperson added .
Aljawaaz Urges Caution and Early Registration for 2025 Hajj
Meanwhile, Aljawaaz advises intending pilgrims to continue using verified and approved payment channels when transacting with tour operators, hotels, and service providers, until the Saudi Central Bank formally extends this policy to pilgrim visa categories.
As preparations for the 1446/2025 Hajj season gather momentum, Aljawaaz Travels & Tours has opened early registration for Nigerian and international pilgrims, offering well-structured packages, expert guidance, and unmatched transparency.
