President Tinubu Orders Review of Announced Hajj Fares

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has ordered the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) to immediately review and reduce the 2026 Hajj fares earlier announced by the commission.

The directive was conveyed by the Deputy Chief of Staff to the President, Senator Ibrahim Hadeija, during a press briefing at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, following a meeting with NAHCON officials and Vice-President Kashim Shettima.

According to reports, NAHCON had initially fixed the 2026 Hajj fares as follows:

Maiduguri–Yola Zone (Yobe, Borno, Adamawa, Taraba): ₦8,318,336.67

Northern States: ₦8,244,813.67

Southern States: ₦8,561,013.67

However, President Tinubu expressed the need for the commission to reassess the fares considering the recent appreciation of the naira due to ongoing economic reforms.

“The fares announced by NAHCON were based on a pessimistic exchange rate of ₦1,550 per dollar,” Senator Hadeija said. “Now that the naira is strengthening, the benefit should be passed to the pilgrims.”

He revealed that the 2026 Hajj fare could drop to between ₦7.6 million and ₦7.7 million, with the final figures to be confirmed within the next two days, depending on the prompt remittance of funds by State Muslim Pilgrim Welfare Boards.

“If payments are remitted quickly, NAHCON can secure foreign exchange from the CBN at a better rate, ensuring a significant reduction in the overall Hajj cost,” he added.

The Chairman of the Kebbi State Muslim Pilgrims Welfare Board, Alhaji Faruk Yaro, appreciated the President and Vice-President for their swift response.

“We are happy with this intervention, which will make Hajj more affordable for many Nigerian Muslims,” Yaro said.

In the same vein, NAHCON Secretary, Dr. Mustapha Mohammad, welcomed the directive, promising that the commission will work tirelessly to bring the fares down to an affordable level.

“The lower the Hajj fare, the more Muslims will have the opportunity to perform this important pillar of Islam,” Dr. Mohammad stated.

The move reflects the Tinubu administration’s commitment to easing the financial burden of pilgrims and ensuring that the benefits of economic reforms reach all Nigerians.
